User Guides > Registering a domain
What is a domain name?
Your domain name is your web identity, for example microsoft.com. Visitors to your website get there using your domain name, people send you email using your domain name. A domain name consists of a Top-Level Domain (like .com, .co.uk, .org, .net, .tv) and your company subdomain. Ideally you should have a domain name that matches your company name exactly, although this may not be possible if someone else has already registered that name. The next best thing is to use a well-known abbreviation of your business name. It's generally not so good to use hyphens between words to create a unique name but this sometimes can't be avoided.
Where can I get a domain name from?
Domain names are administered by organisations known as domain name registrars. Registrars keep a record of who owns what domain. Registering a domain name is usually done online. Ekeda can help you with the whole process of obtaining a good domain name and setting it up for use.
Is it true I need to renew my domain name?
Yes, when a domain name is purchased it is purchased for an agreed time period (typically 2 years but possibly longer) when this time period has lapsed the domain name will then need to be renewed. If the domain name is not renewed it will become available again for someone else to register. Registrars will notify you prior to your domain name expiring by email only. For this reason it is important that you still retain access to the email address used to register the domain name with or inform the registrar of a change of email address.
Can I register any domain name?
Yes, provided the domain name you wish to register is not currently registered and does not infringe on an existing trademark, in which case you may be legally prevented from registering the domain name (or required to hand it over to the person or organisation that owns the trademark). If you are unsure you should check that the domain name is not also a trademark. If the domain name you wish to register or already have registered, is an existing trademark, you should seek legal advice or try to reach an agreement with the trademark holder. More information on domain name restrictions can be found here.
How much does it cost?
The cost of domain name registration is in the region of £50 for 2 years. Some companies sell domain names extremely cheaply but there are often drawbacks with these special deals. It is often better to pay a bit more for the higher quality of service and domain administration tools. If the registrar will not manage your domain for you, you will have to pay a third party which can be more expensive.
When I buy a domain name do I get a website and email address with it?
Not automatically, although most domain name registrars have arrangements with third party providers of email and web hosting solutions, which can be purchased for an additional fee. Setting up a website and email addresses requires specialist knowledge and facilities. When you register your domain the registrar may be able to assist you but will often charge an additional fee.
